Monsters among us
Everyone has cracks, that aren’t easy and balanced, a darker side. A side that they’re afraid to show the world. Even the people you love the most have a dark side that you might’ve never seen. Because people just let you swim on the surface and let you pretend like you know them completely. They never let you dive deep inside and allow you to look into their secrets, they won’t ever carry you to their darker side.
In most, their dominant side is their bright, pure side. But in some instances their recessive side takes over. And when this happens, you can see that sudden change in their eyes, because they’re the windows to the soul. You can see them fight those monsters inside of them, you see that internal battle. And all you can do is just stand there and watch, hoping that they’ll return. And most of the time, they do. But sometimes... sometimes, they don’t. Sometimes they loose. Sometimes they give in to their own darkness. Sometimes the monsters take over.
But you keep hoping that your person is still in there. Somewhere. Sunken. And you keep holding onto that piece of hope and you’ll do anything to feel that familiar warmth again. You try to fight their battle for them. But remember, when you fight these monsters, you should make sure that in the process you, yourself don’t become a monster, because as Friedrich Nietzsche said, “if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you.”
But here’s something that you might not have thought about, maybe they don’t need your saving, maybe this is who they’re supposed to be. Because darkness doesn’t always have to be bad. It’s whatever you make it to be. They just need to figure out how to shine a light at their shadows and how to use their demons to their advantage.
So just because you can’t recognise your person anymore, doesn’t mean they’re gone or broken, it just means they’ve changed. And holding on to their past selves doesn’t bring you anything but hurt. So the best thing you can do for them and yourself is just accept it and move on.
